McAllen Receives Tree City USA Designation

Courtesy Xochitl Mora,

(McAllen, Texas)-McAllen was once again recognized as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Keep McAllen Beautiful’s (KMB) Tree Committee worked alongside the City of McAllen’s Parks & Recreation and Public Works Departments and Quinta Mazatlán to gather tree care information to meet the application requirements.

McAllen first became a Tree City USA in 2021. Cities have to reapply each year to qualify for this prestigious designation and have to meet the Tree City USA program’s four requirements: a tree board or department; a tree-care ordinance; an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita; and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Additionally, McAllen has qualified for the Growth Award through Tree City USA since 2022.

Tree City USA signs are installed and located along Business 83 and Jackson Road and Bicentennial and Expressway 83 frontage road.
