Laredo, TX (Webb County) – Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar today announced the creation of a task force at the sheriff’s office that will oversee the ever-growing problem of calls relating to people discharging their weapons in rural parts of the county.

Sheriff Cuellar reminds the public that a person is charged with a third degree felony when that person knowingly discharges a firearm at or in the direction of a person, building, habitation, or vehicle. It is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine not to exceed $10,000.

A person may also be arrested and charged with a Class A misdemeanor if they recklessly engage in conduct that places another person in imminent danger of serious bodily injury. It is punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine not to exceed $4,000.

“With New Year’s Eve celebrations upon us, this task force will be in full force. We are letting you know that we will be watching you,” said Sheriff Cuellar. “We want for people to enjoy themselves, but at the same time, they need to celebrate responsibly.”

Sheriff Cuellar said to not think about it twice and immediately report anyone committing this crime by calling the sheriff’s office at 956-523-4408.

“We would much rather be safe than sorry. People have tragically died as a result of reckless individuals who don’t have any respect for others,” he added. “We need to remember that what goes up must come down.”
