Rene Salas Sentenced to 30 Years

(Laredo, Texas)-The District Attorney’s Office secured a 30-year prison sentence against Rene Salas. Salas pleaded guilty to Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant F/1. On July 20, 2019, at approximately 4:35 a.m. LPD received a service call for a domestic disturbance at Towne Place Suites by Marriot, located on Arena Blvd. Upon arrival, officers were advised that a male subject had a handgun with possible suicidal tendencies. LPD officers then initiated a search of the male individual in the vicinity.
Contact was made with Salas and gunfire was exchanged. One officer sustained two gun shot wounds during the incident. On Monday, May 15, 2023, the sentencing trial of Rene Salas began in the 406th District Court before the Honorable Judge Oscar Hale Jr.
The case was submitted to the jury on Wednesday, May 17, 2023. The jury rendered a verdict after 3.5 hours of deliberation. Punishment was assessed at 30 years to serve in the TDCJ. Assistant District Attorney Eduardo Ramirez, Assistant District Attorney Karina Rios and Assistant District Attorney Francisco Mendoza prosecuted the case. The defendant was represented by Philip Del Rio.
