Laredo, Texas –  U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced a $750,000 federal earmark he secured to support the renovation and restoration of Laredo’s historic Plaza Theatre. The project will consist of accessibility improvements, roof repairs, restroom code updates, light repairs, and mural restorations. The theatre will also be converted to a multi-purpose facility that will be used for school and university performances, business conferences, and other entertainment events.

“The restoration of the Plaza Theatre has been a priority in our community for a long time. I secured this federal earmark to help preserve this iconic symbol of our community,” said Congressman Cuellar. “The Plaza Theatre restoration project is an essential step to spurring economic development in downtown Laredo. I want to thank Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño, former Mayor Pete Saenz, Laredo City Councilwoman Alyssa Cigarroa, and the rest of the Laredo City Council for their leadership in renovating the Plaza Theatre and helping bring Laredo’s downtown scene back to life.”

“Quality of life is important to the citizens of Laredo, and so I applaud all efforts to restore our historic downtown. I want to thank Congressman Cuellar for his hard work and earmark funding to restore our Plaza theatre,” said Mayor of Laredo Dr. Victor Trevino.

Built 1947 and located at 1018 Hidalgo Street, the Plaza Theatre is an Art Modern style building with an area of 15,253 feet with two seating areas – 900 seats in the lower section and 490 seats in the balcony. The Plaza Theatre restoration project will create good paying jobs, support local artists, and provide economic opportunities for Laredo residents. The restored and rehabilitated theater will serve as a cornerstone for the revitalization of downtown Laredo.
