Community encouraged to voluntary conserve water in irrigation, recreational use

(McAllen, Texas)-Mandatory stage 2 water restrictions were lifted for McAllen Public Utility water customers, including residents and businesses. Stage 2 restricted sprinkler system irrigation to only two days a week, during specific hours for each of the six zones McAllen had been divided into. Stage 2 was triggered when the water supply from Amistad and Falcon Dam reached less than 25% capacity.

“McAllen Public Utility is a responsible steward of our water and during the drought last summer we felt it important for MPU water customers to follow the mandatory water restrictions out of necessity to ensure a continued adequate water supply and pressure,” said Mark Vega, P.E., general manager for McAllen Public Utility.

“Recent rains and the lower temperatures have already reduced the deman for water, so we felt it important to lift the mandatory restrictions on irrigation and recreational use of water.

However, we do encourage our customers to continue to voluntary conserve water when possible and avoid unnecessary waste of our most precious resource.”

The City of McAllen Water Conservation Plan has five stages. Stage 1 is completely voluntary, and Stage 5 is the most restrictive.
