Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo Health Director was invited to participate in the White House Summit on COVID-19 Health Equity. The summit hosted public health champions from around the country to discuss how they tackled health inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health Director, Dr. Richard Chamberlain took part in discussions during a very intimate setting alongside the U.S. Surgeon General, Vice Admiral Vivek H. Murthy, MD, MBA, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Director, Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH, and the COVID-19 Response Coordinator, Dr. Ashish Jha, during the White House’s COVID-19 Equity What Works Summit.

Discussions included “It All Starts with Trust,” “The Power of Partnerships,” and “From COVID-19 Equity to Health Equity.” He then took part in a poster session detailing the work the City of Laredo Health Department carries out daily while ensuring health equity is at the foundation of the entire operation. Namely, spotlighting the importance of public-private partnerships (Wellness and Equity Alliance and City of Laredo Health Department).

Also shared during the session is the City of Laredo Health Department’s efforts in working towards obtaining Community Health Worker Licensures for every member of the staff. This initiative was of much interest to our partners in health at the CDC. Community Health Workers serve as the connective tissue of the community, navigating persons to health and social services to achieve their fullest potential.
