McAllen, TX – McAllen International Airport (MFE) celebrated the opening of its annual Ofrenda Exhibit, now on display beginning today, October 27, through November 7, 2022 in the airport lobby.

“By putting up Ofrendas, families in Mexico remember their loved ones as part of Mexico’s Día de Muertos. The folklore vested around this holiday continues to enrich our community,” said McAllen Mayor Javier Villalobos. “This is the fourth year we display an Ofrenda in the Airport lobby for the community and travelers visiting McAllen.”

Día de Muertos is an opportunity to remember and celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. Like most celebrations, this morning’s exhibit opening was filled with traditional music and performances. The temporary Ofrenda exhibit takes inspiration from traditional elements including: water, wind, earth, and fire; all believed to remember and honor loved ones. MFE´s Ofrenda aims to capture and represent the uniqueness of McAllen´s cultural blend.

“McAllen International Airport continues leading international connectivity to Mexico in the Rio Grande Valley. Since the launch of Aeromar in McAllen, we have built stronger relationships with our Mexican partners. We also have worked together in servicing our respective communities with nonstop flights that facilitate business and family-friends visits,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “This Ofrenda display will give the public a glimpse of what they can experience in Mexico around this time of the year and also celebrates the culture we have fostered in McAllen.”
