LAREDO, Texas— On Thursday, September 15, the City of Laredo and Council Member for District 5, Ruben Gutierrez, Jr., along with the Laredo Police Department and Webb County Sheriff’s Office, celebrated a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Sgt. Denzo Dog Park, located inside the Jovita Idar “El Progreso” Park.

The Sgt. Denzo Dog Park includes an area for small dogs and a separate area for large dogs to enjoy various amenities such as a water fountain, bench, play items, and more. This park is open to all the community’s four-legged friends to enjoy from 7:00 AM – 11:00 PM and it is fenced all around.

A dedication plaque has been placed at the entrance of the park, dedicating it to Sgt. Denzo, who was a very intelligent and brave K-9 and U.S. Army combat veteran that served our country and saved many from harm.

Sergeant Denzo

Sergeant Denzo, P-505, was born on December 12, 2007. Due to his high intelligence, Denzo was trained and recruited by the United States Army. A highly trained combat veteran, Denzo served two tours overseas with the U.S. Army Bomb Squad and saved many lives.

He was trained to search for explosives. Denzo took heavy contact from rocket-propelled grenades and sniper fire, mostly directed toward him. He was always 200 meters in front of the special operations teams and during his tours overseas, he found 20 explosive devices.

Following his retirement from the U.S. Army, Denzo started working in April 2014 for the Webb County Sheriff’s Office, where he was part of the Canine Unit and helped secure county buildings from explosives.

Sgt. Denzo passed away in San Antonio on June 3, 2021, following a hard-fought battle with illness.

He was a true warrior loved by our entire community. He will be missed dearly.
