Laredo, Texas — The City of Laredo hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the anticipated Buena Vista Sports Complex on Wednesday, August 31, 2022. Guests celebrated the beginning of a new installment that will promote physical well-being and quality of life for the community.
During the ceremony, the City of Laredo expressed their gratitude to the Valdez and Ramos families for donating the land to build what is considered a “gamechanger” for sports tourism in Laredo.
The Buena Vista Sports Complex will be a 200-acre recreation center and regional park with many amenities such as turf fields for baseball, softball, soccer, and football as well as food truck parking, an outdoor amphitheater, trails, and more. In addition, the complex will include sports-level lighting that will support evening games.
On August 2021, the Laredo City Council approved the Sports Complex Master Plan. The City has awarded contracts to Leyendecker Construction of Texas, Inc. and JHS Architect, Inc. for the construction and architecture of this project.
Leyendecker Construction of Texas, Inc. was contracted for pre-construction, construction, and bidding services in the approximate amount of $32 million. A professional services contract was also awarded to JHS Architect, Inc. in the approximate amount of $2.95 million for surveying, architectural, and engineering professional services.
“This is a magnificent and historic day for our community as we are announcing a monumental project in South Laredo,” stated Mayor Pete Saenz. “We have great expectations to see more major investments in this area, but more importantly, the Buena Vista Sports Complex will definitely generate more significant economic prosperity throughout our entire city.
I express my gratitude to the land owners for their generous contributions which will help catapult continued growth in South Laredo. This is truly an investment for the future and betterment of our city.”
“We are proud to announce that, after more than 3 years of partnering with the City of Laredo to create a destination for sports tourism in South Texas and, specifically, a place with endless recreational opportunities for Laredo youth and for all Laredoans, our work towards a common vision has finally become a reality,” states Donato Ramos, Jr., sports complex land donor.
“We are so appreciative of the City of Laredo for the beginning of the Buena Vista Sports Complex, a premier sports tournament venue that will attract visitors to our beautiful city from across Texas, the United States, and beyond and, most importantly, will create a place where all of Laredo’s citizens and local recreational organizations can come together to enjoy time outdoors with friends and family.”
The new Buena Vista Sports Complex will be located on the east side of Cuatro Vientos Road and Bob Bullock Loop 20 between Lomas del Sur Blvd. and La Pita Mangana Rd. The project is estimated to be completed by mid-2024.
