The City of Laredo Health Department Reports Assessment of Cancers

Laredo, Texas – In an effort to track morbidity and mortality of cancers due to recent reports of EtO emissions in the community, the City of Laredo Health Department requested the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) to design and implement a cancer assessment in a combined three census tract area in January 2022.
The geographic areas of concern are in the northwest district, including Las Minas Rd and Los Corralitos Colonia. As of July 2022, the assessment has been completed by the DSHS’s Environmental Surveillance and Toxicology Branch and can be found on their website.
The objective for the assessment was to determine if there are more cancer cases in the combined census tract area compared to the expected rates in Texas during a specific timeframe from 2006 through 2019.
The study is not determining the causes or associations to the studied diseases.
In addition, the assessment involved analyzing four types of cancers for children and adults using data from the Texas Cancer Registry and accounted age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Results from the assessment include:
Based on cancer rates in Texas, the areas of concern do show a higher rate of non-hodgkin lymphoma–extranodal cancer for all ages from 2006 through 2019.
All-age cancers including breast, stomach, and non-hodgkin lymphoma-nodal showed no statistical significance when compared to cancer rates in Texas
