Laredo, TX (Webb County) –Webb County Sheriff’s Office correctional officers on Sunday evening intercepted a small amount of cocaine intended to make its way into the Webb County Jail.
During intake procedures on Luis Mario Cortez, 18, who was initially brought in on possession of marijuana charges, correctional officers discovered a folded $5 bill in his wallet that contained the white powdery substance.
Also found was a plastic baggie with more cocaine. Cortez was additionally charged with prohibited substance in a correctional facility, state jail felony.
He was released on a combined bond of $13,000.
“This confiscation shows how desperate inmates are to sneak contraband into our jail. Had it not been for our deputies’ ongoing training and fast thinking, this situation could have become much worse and placed our jail population at risk,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar.
