Laredo, TX (Webb County) — On Monday, June 6, 2022, at approximately 5:38 pm, the Webb County Sheriff’s Office received a call from U.S Border Patrol agents who had encountered a tractor hauling a belly dump trailer with illegal immigrants and who were trapped inside the belly dump.

Deputies were immediately dispatched to Espejo Gates Road, seven miles west of Espejo Gates Road and U.S Highway 83 North, where they found 62 illegal immigrants. They were extracted from the trailer and taken into custody. They also found an unresponsive man. He was rendered life-saving support by Border Patrol EMTs, BORSTAR Agents, and Webb County Fire Department and was later pronounced dead at the scene. The Texas Department of Public Safety and a Border Patrol helicopter were also on scene assisting with the call.

“I congratulate and thank all agencies who collaborated on this case,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar. “Unfortunately, one life was lost, but we were able to rescue the other immigrants. This situation could have turned much more tragic. I remind the public to please stay vigilant of your surroundings and report any suspicious activities to our hotline at 956-415-2878 (BUST).”

Several Border Patrol agents began searching the brushy area to locate the tractor-trailer driver. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division was activated and arrived at the location to take over the investigation.

Minutes later, Border Patrol agents located Arling Antonio Gutierrez Garcia, 48, a Mexican National, and he was turned over to the Webb County Sheriff’s Office. Gutierrez Garcia was charged with smuggling of persons causing serious bodily injury, felony 1, and was remanded to the Webb County Jail.

Time for Abbot to step up and shut this invasion down. Throw your compassionate rhetoric out the window and bring in more military dispatch a few maybe more and this will slow down, no compassion action is what is needed. They have destroyed my ranch.
