(Laredo, Texas)-In 2021-22, the Region One GEAR UP: College Now-Career Connected! project established the Family Champion Award to recognize the efforts of campus parent leaders, from the 21 GEAR UP high schools, that have been great supporters of the program, its students, and its families.
Many of these parent leaders have worked alongside the campus GEAR UP Facilitators to continue the GEAR UP mission to ensure that all students reach their level of success.
The GEAR UP Family Champion is passionate and committed to the GEAR UP movement and the goal of ensuring that college access and success is available to all students.
Through their work with other families, school faculty, staff, and partners of the GEAR UP grant, these individuals exude the perseverance to effectively assist students and their families in their quest for postsecondary success.
Mr. Juan Arredondo, LBJ High School GEAR UP parent of Esthefania Arredondo, was nominated for this award by his GEAR UP campus facilitators and was selected as one of the inaugural Family Champions for 2021-22!
His commitment to his family, education, and his community make him a deserving recipient of this award.
In an effort to help build his leadership capacity, Region One GEAR UP has invited Mr. Arredondo to Washington, D.C. from July 17-20, 2022 to attend the 2022 NCCEP/GEAR UP National Conference as a participant in the Parent Leadership Institute.
He will be joining other GEAR UP parent leaders from across the country in this unique experience.
