Roosevelt Elementary First Annual “Boxcar Building Contest”

(Laredo, Texas)-Roosevelt Elementary students enjoyed participating in the campus’ first Boxcar Building Contest. Students rose to the challenge and built innovative vehicles with a little help from their parents. The activity also gave them an opportunity to apply their Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (S.T.E.M.), skills to the test. The result of their combined efforts produced an impressive array of customized vehicles that included food trucks, jeeps, ice cream trucks, sportscars, tankers, semi-rigs, 4×4 trucks, vans, sedans, and buses.

Five UISD Polce Officers and teachers from UISD’s Instructional Technology Department visited the campus to judge 250 entries. Criteria included originality/creativity, quality of workmanship, family involvement, and overall presentation.

The students then “parked” their homemade vehicles to enjoy an old-fashioned “drive-in” movie experience in the star-lit gym – which included a concession stand! “We coupled our STEM project with a rewarding experience. The kids built their boxcars and we enhanced the project by re-creating the drive-in movie experience that so many of us enjoyed as kids and young adults” said Principal Sylvia Ruiz.
