(Laredo, Texas)-Lyndon B. Johnson High School (LBJHS), celebrated the renaming of its library in memory of Lance Corporal David Lee Espinoza. The United ISD Board of Trustees approved the name change earlier this year in honor of the late LBJHS graduate. Espinoza graduated from LBJHS in 2019, joined the United States Marine Corps., and was one of 13 service members killed in a suicide bombing at Kabul airport during the U.S. evacuation of Afghanistan on August 26, 2021.

The program began in an expanse of the campus hallway identified as the Hall Of Honor, where visitors can observe photos of LBJHS graduates who have served our nation. Principal Armando Salazar welcomed everyone to the dedication and his remarks were followed by the presentation of colors by the LBJHS Navy JROTC under the direction of retired Lt. Andrew P. Rodriguez and Petty Officer First Class, Javier Tobias.

The celebration continued with a procession to the entryway of the campus library, where a short program was held prior to the unveiling of a commemorative plaque. “Lance Corporal David Lee Espinoza shall forever be remembered as a hero to this high school and our community. He walked the halls of this great high school, then graduated and answered the call of duty to serve his country.

This library is now a testament to his legacy as a valiant young man and patriot who made the ultimate sacrifice while pursuing his dreams to protect and defend the country he loved”.

It is also a testament to the way he was raised by his parents, and we are very honored to rename this library in his memory. Welcome to the Lance Corporal David Lee Espinoza Memorial Library”, said United ISD Superintendent David H., Gonzalez. The Espinoza family was also presented with a Congressional Certificate of Recognition by Ms. Susan San Miguel, who attended the proceedings on behalf of Congressman Henry Cuellar.
