Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – A traffic stop Friday afternoon in north Laredo by Sheriff’s Office deputies led to the seizure 25 pounds of cocaine and the arrest of a Mexican national.
Following the traffic stop on a white Nissan Tsuru bearing Mexican license plates near San Dario Avenue and Del Mar Boulevard, deputies discovered 10 packages of cocaine hidden inside a game feed sack. They arrested Miguel Angel Puente Villa, 29, of Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, on possession of controlled substance charges. He was remanded to the Webb County Jail. The cocaine has an estimated street value of $295,100.
After talking to Puente during the field interview, he admitted to transporting the contraband inside the game feed sack.
The investigation is ongoing.
“This is another example of our deputies going the extra mile for the safety of our community. This cocaine could have very easily ended in the wrong hands,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar. “I remind the community to please report any suspicious activities by calling our hotline at 956-415-BUST (2878). You may be eligible for a cash reward.”
This incident, and it’s very dangerous possible outcomes, point to an excellent reason why traffic stops should only be conducted by sworn law enforcement personnel. There are several entities considering the use of unarmed civilians for traffic enforcement. This event could have very easily gone sideways and not had a very happy ending.
