City of Laredo Health Department Announces COVID-19 Data – Active Recovered Formula

Courtesy Noraida Negron,

Laredo, Texas – To assimilate with the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) methodology, The City of Laredo Health Department will make a change to the current formula to estimate the number of active and recovered COVID-19 individuals. Currently, active cases are estimated by identifying individuals with a confirmed real-time PCR COVID-19 test collected within a rolling ten-day period. Following the new year (starting January 1, 2022), active cases will be identified using real-time PCR and antigen COVID-19 tests collected within a rolling 14-day period.

To account for those severely ill, the Laredo Health Department will account hospitalized patients with a COVID-19 test collected within a rolling thirty-two-day period. Because both active and recovered case counts are estimates, they will vary from what is reported by DSHS. This change will impact the number of estimated active cases and is likely to increase the number reported.

The Laredo Health Department would like to inform the formula is provisional and subject to change. After the holidays, the Laredo Health Department will reach out to DSHS to inquire if there will be any changes to their current active-recovered formula before we proceed with implementation.
