Webb County Jail Inmate Found Unresponsive

Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – A 30-year-old female by the name of Ashley Nicole Castro was found unresponsive today October 9, 2021, at the Webb County Jail.
Castro was found unresponsive at 5:26 am and was pronounced dead by the Medical Examiner at 5:39 am.
Laredo Police arrested Castro on October 3, 2021, for possession of controlled substance, but unfortunately, she refused dangerous drug detox treatment offered to her by the Webb County Jail medical personnel.
“We encourage for all inmates who are on drugs would take the dangerous drugs detox medication, but unfortunately we cannot force them,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar. “They have the right to deny the treatment.”
The Webb County Jail is regulated by policies and procedures that are in place and have to be conducted by all jail personnel as per the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. Jail officials reviewed video surveillance cameras and log book information, and confirmed that the officers assigned to that post were conducting their duties that they are required as per the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
Sheriff’s officials contacted the Texas Rangers to conduct a separate investigation for transparency.
“Our deepest condolences go out to Castro’s Family,” said Sheriff Cuellar.
