Laredo, Texas – In an effort to alleviate hunger in the South Texas region, the City of Laredo along with the South Texas Food Bank proclaimed the month of September 2021 as Hunger Action Month. The proclamation was read and signed by Council Member for District 4, Alberto Torres, Jr., on behalf of Mayor Pete Saenz on September 16 during a special ceremony at City Hall Council Chambers. South Texas Food Bank representatives were present during the ceremony including Executive Director, Alma Boubel.

Hunger Action Month, as recognized by Feeding America and food banks across the nation every September, has a purpose of raising awareness of hunger and promoting ways for individuals across South Texas to get involved. According to Feeding America, millions of people in the country are facing unemployment, especially now due to the pandemic. This has led to a struggle to pay bills for life necessities such as housing, childcare, and medical care. Many are forced to choose between food or other essential necessities.

“Food should not be an impossible choice in our community or America,” stated Councilmember Torres during the ceremony. “I want to congratulate the South Texas Food Bank for their efforts in fighting hunger, including assisting over 1 million families since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in the South Texas region. By taking action, we can all end hunger together.”

The City of Laredo recommends the community to observe Hunger Action Month by raising awareness of the issue, looking for volunteer opportunities at the South Texas Food Bank, wearing orange, and donating funds to help alleviate hunger.
