Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo hosted a press conference to welcome the delegation from San Mateo Atenco, Estado de Mexico on Thursday, July 29, 2021 to follow up on the Sister Cities agreement signed between both communities. San Mateo Atenco is located in the State of Mexico. It lies West of Mexico City and is part of the Toluca urban area bordering the city to the East.

Laredo and San Mateo Atenco became Sister Cities in 2017 during the Laredo International Sister Cities Festival. Since then, they have continued a partnership between both communities. Through City Council’s approval in 2019, the City of Laredo donated a fire truck to San Mateo Atenco. This donation has not only benefitted the City of San Mateo, but also the communities around it, and is a key addition to their brand-new Fire Department Building. Both City of Laredo and San Mateo Atenco Fire Departments have also been in close communication regarding potential opportunities for training.

Since the agreement was signed, the City has received visits from different cultural representatives from both cities and artisans at the Laredo Sister Cities Festival. San Mateo Atenco has a strong footwear industry manufacturing different types of products that have become very attractive to the attendees of the annual event.

The next step in the relationship between Laredo and San Mateo is the point of sale project, offering a space where artisans from San Mateo Atenco and other regions of the State of Mexico will bring their products to our community, making them available year-round. A delegation from the City of Laredo had the opportunity to visit San Mateo back in May to begin the process and now in a follow up visit we welcome their delegation.

The Delegation from the City of San Mateo Atenco includes:

-Julio César Serrano González, Mayor

-Gregorio González Ortiz, Third Councilmember

-Jaír de Jesús Pichardo Zepeda, Fifth Councilmember

-Diana Karen González Espinoza, Second Councilmember
