Washington, D.C.— Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28) received the Abraham Lincoln Leadership for America Award and the Jefferson-Hamilton Award for Bipartisanship by the United States Chamber of Commerce. These two awards are presented to members of Congress who demonstrate bipartisan leadership and constructive governing necessary to move our country forward.

Representatives Don Bacon (R-NE-2), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA-1) and Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-7) also received the awards.

“Right now, with our political climate more polarized than ever, bipartisanship isn’t about “meeting in the middle”, it’s about finding common ground in developing real, sensible solutions,” Congressman Cuellar said. “This approach is essential to when we are working on nuanced issues like education and health care, but also in building consensus on national priorities like immigration, infrastructure and voting rights. I thank the Chamber of Commerce for their continued support in promoting bipartisanship as we look to pass crucial legislation for the constituents of Texas-28 and the American people.”

“These awards recognize members of Congress based on their co-sponsorship of legislation important to the business community and who demonstrated a commitment to forging bipartisan solutions that move our nation and economy forward,” said U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Suzanne Clark. “The Chamber appreciates Congressman Cuellar’s support of policies that create jobs and support economic growth as well as their willingness to work across the aisle.”

This is the second consecutive year that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has bestowed these awards to Congressman Cuellar.

The Abraham Lincoln Leadership for America Award recognizes members of Congress who demonstrate the leadership needed to advance policies that support American business. It is presented to members of Congress on the leadership component of the Chamber’s forthcoming “How They Voted” congressional scorecard. Since the start of the 116th Congress, the Chamber has urged members to cosponsor certain bills and refrain from cosponsoring others. This award is based on the number of times a member took the recommended actions.

The Jefferson-Hamilton Award for Bipartisanship recognizes those members of Congress who in their actions have demonstrated a willingness to work across the aisle in support of common objectives. The Jefferson-Hamilton Award is presented to members of Congress based on the number of bills — except those formally opposed by the Chamber — a member cosponsors introduced by a member of the opposite party. Members are ranked relative to the performance of all other members of their party, with the top ranked in both parties earning 100%.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.
