Rep. Cuellar Announces $2 Million in Federal Funds to SCAN

Laredo, TX – Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $2,000,000 in federal funding over five years for Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN) Inc. These funds, awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Center for Mental Health Services, will be used for SCAN’s Border Traumatic Stress Response Center. This program provides evidence-based trauma-focused counseling services to youth between the ages of three and 17 that have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. SCAN has received the first year of funding, amounting to $400,000.

“SCAN provides critical mental and behavioral health services,” said Congressman Cuellar. “This federal investment will foster a healthy environment for children and young adults across 17 different counties, including Webb, Zapata, La Salle, Starr and Hidalgo Counties, to work with professionals in addressing traumatic experiences; therefore, beginning the process to heal.

As a senior member of the Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fund programs that provide essential services to our youth in border communities. I want to thank President and CEO Isela Dabdoub, Vice President Luis E. Flores, Project Director Susana Rivera, as well as the rest of their hardworking staff for providing compassionate care for our community.”
