LAREDO, TEXAS – On Monday, June 7, 2021, the City of Laredo Mayor, Pete Saenz, Members of Council, and City Management were honored to recognize one important individual and two groups in our community during yesterday’s Council Meeting.

First, Chef Jesse Kuykendall was presented with the key to the city. A Laredo native, also known as “Chef Kirk”, won season 47, episode 13 of Food Network’s Chopped program. The City of Laredo proudly presented this well-deserved recognition to Chef Kirk due to her efforts to follow her dreams, pursue her goals in the culinary business, and become an inspiration to others in the community and to her alma matter Cigarroa High School. Council Member for District 6, Dr. Marte Martinez, honored her with a plaque showcasing her accomplishments. Furthermore, Council Member for District 2, Vidal Rodriguez, gifted her a set of kitchen items that include a Laredo logo engraved on them, so she can use in the future and continue represent Laredo, Texas.

Next, the City of Laredo Council presented a recognition to Laredo Independent School District and United Independent School District nurses for their services to the community and assisting the City of Laredo with vaccine inoculations during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Their service and contributions to the Laredo community made an extraordinary impact throughout the pandemic. Mayor Saenz and the Laredo City Council are forever grateful to them for all their collaborative efforts during the vaccination drives that happened on their campuses.

Next, the City of Laredo Council presented a recognition to Monika Sanchez, Art Club teacher at United South Middle School, and club members for their creative minds. The students created super-sized maracas sculptures that will now be featured in Ripley’s Believe it or Not. The work of art is 13 feet long and over 4 feet tall and has gotten the attention on social media of over one million views and from representatives of Ripley’s Believe it or Not. The students will appear in the 19th edition of Ripley’s Believe it or Not book series.
