Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo is proud to proclaim June 17th as “Dump the Pump Day.” The proclamation was signed by Mayor Pete Saenz. A proclamation and unveiling ceremony for a sustainable transportation line, hosted by District 7 Councilmember, Vanessa Perez, and El Metro Transit, took place at City Hall Council Chambers on Thursday, June 17th. Throughout the event, City officials expressed the importance of conserving fuel resources and prevention of environmental pollution.
Since 2006, “Dump the Pump Day” has been observed by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) to encourage commuters to use public transportation in order to save money, help the environment, and improve quality of life. On average, people who share one car can save $10,000 on car payments, gas, maintenance, and repairs. The City and Webb County anticipate this day will educate the community on how public transit empowers growth by driving economic development and revitalizing neighborhoods. For instance, public transportation directly employs more than 400,000 people and creates hundreds of thousands of private-sector jobs. Also, every $1 invested in public transportation generates approximately $4 in economic returns, powering community growth and revitalization. “The mission is to also increase awareness of the great services El Metro Transit offers. I encourage the community to give public transportation a try,” added Councilmember Vanessa Perez.
Additionally, this day is considered to be a celebration of efficiency and the future. It is also dedicated to spread awareness of depleting fossil fuel resources due to factors such as population growth, urbanization, and globalization. In celebration of “Dump the Pump Day”, City officials and El Metro Transit introduced the new Diesel-Hybrid bus. By introducing this new transportation line, the City will be enhancing its sustainability goals, increasing safety, generating greater fuel savings, and lowering operating and maintenance costs. The Diesel-Hybrid bus will begin circulating on Monday, June 21st.
“The introduction of our first diesel-hybrid bus is a transformative stepping stone for the City Of Laredo” said Claudia San Miguel, El Metro’s General Manager, “This environmental-friendly bus is a prime example of the commitment of the transit system to not only provide a safe and reliable service, but one that protects the environmental sustainability of our great city”.
