Laredo, Texas — The City of Laredo and Council Member for District 6, Dr. Marte Martinez, were honored to unveil a new art mural at the Reverend Deacon Leonel & Irma San Miguel Pool, located at North Central Park. The event took place on May 6, 2021 and guests included City management, department directors, and more. The event also welcomed Gene Belmares, former Council Member for District 6, Reverend Deacon Henry Mejia, Armando Lopez, Member of the City of Laredo Fine Arts and Culture Commission, and Victoria Marquez, local artist/muralist. During the ceremony, Lopez recited his poem, “Rio Grande Waters”, which interprets a perspective on the river from all the way to its starting point in Colorado.

The mural project began in October 2020 and took approximately one month to be completed. The art piece represents the Manadas Creek and the rhythm and movements of this waterway as it flows through North Central Park.

“It is very important to continue investing in public art,” stated Council Member for District 6, Dr. Marte Martinez. “As this project represents the Manadas Creek, which flows through North Central Park and ends in the Rio Grande, it reminds us to continue being good stewards for our local parks, creeks, and environment as a whole. I want to thank City of Laredo Utilities, Keep Laredo Beautiful, Environmental Services, Parks and Recreation, Laredo Public Library, and, additionally, the Fine Arts and Culture and the Keep Laredo Beautiful Commission for their support in this project.”

Victoria Marquez is a native Laredoan and is also an art educator. She has recently been selected for the Cultivarte Laredo’s 2021 Visual Residency Program. Through this art piece, Marquez has helped Keep Laredo Beautiful in bringing awareness of the Manadas Creek.
