Laredo, Texas — The City of Laredo and Council Member for District 4, Alberto Torres Jr., held an unveiling ceremony for the Cruz Field monument, which was donated by J. Cruz & Associates, LLC. The event took place on Friday, May 14th at the baseball field. Many guests attended the event including City Management, Conrado Cruz, Jr., and Juan J. Cruz. The monument is dedicated to members of the Cruz family who founded the baseball field in the 1940s.
On what used to be known as Block No. 424, Cruz Field was established and founded there by members of the Cruz family including Luis Cruz, Conrado Cruz, Sr., and Manuel Jaime. For many years, Block 424 was used by local baseball teams to play on what used to be a rough field. After seeing teams playing in rough conditions, members of the Cruz family approached the former Director of the City of Laredo Streets Department to create a more lighted recreational area or softball field in Block No. 424. As soon as the baseball field was completed, local teams began to use it for evening games. Such teams included Laredo Air Force Base, Central Power & Light Co., Mercy Hospital, and the Laredo Street Department. More teams began to take advantage of the field throughout the years, including the Sunday Morning League.
