LAREDO, TX (Webb County) –A routine traffic stop by Webb County Sheriff’s Office deputies Monday afternoon on the 29 mile marker of Interstate 35 southbound led to the seizure of more than $200,000 in cash.

During the traffic stop, conducted on a 2017 black GMC Sierra, deputies found nine plastic-wrapped bundles of U.S. currency inside an ice chest located in the back seat of the truck. The amount seized totaled approximately $205,000.

A 27-year-old male driver from Laredo was detained for questioning and was taken into federal custody by Homeland Security Investigations. The case is ongoing.

“I applaud my deputies for their keen interest in keeping our streets safe. This seized money has every indication that it comes from illicit activity,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar.

Sheriff Cuellar reminds the community to please report any suspicious activity by calling the Sheriff’s Office hotline at 956-415-BUST (2878). You will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
