(Laredo, Texas)-The Regional Final Spelling Bee was hosted on Friday, March 26, 2021, through a virtual platform. The 2021 winner was United ISD Lamar Bruni Vergara Middle’s eighth-grade student Emmanuel Rimocal, with the word fondant. Furthermore, Rimocal will receive the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will allow him to compete with other competitive spellers nationwide.

However, he is not alone as the second- and third- place winners were also recognized by the competition.

These individuals include:

2nd place — Kaiyuan Nan, 8th grade, United Middle.

3rd place — Paula Davis, 8th grade, Gonzalez Middle.

Over 60 students competed during this year’s historically first virtual Regional Spelling Bee from their home campuses. Between the collaboration of UISD, LISD, The Literacy Volunteers of Laredo and the Laredo Morning Times, students from across the city were able to continue taking part in the competitions and flex their spelling muscles. Approximately 1,500 words were included in their Spelling Bee list, which students needed to learn in order to remain competitive.
