(Laredo, Texas)-The Laredo Area Community Foundation (LACF), and the Laredo Morning Times (LMT), recently announced that Mr. Hector Perez is the recipient of the 2020-2021 Jefferson Volunteer of The Year Award for his work as President and Board member for the Imaginarium of South Texas.
Mr. Perez has worked with the Imaginarium of South Texas for the past 3 years supporting Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics initiatives that motivate students to strive for academic success in Webb, Jim Hogg, Zapata, and Starr Counties.
For the past 35 years Mr. Perez has immersed himself in several local service projects and organizations. Eight of those years were spent serving as a board member for Communities in Schools (CIS), where he helped to organize their annual golf tournament fundraiser. Mr. Perez was also a five-year member of the Laredo Kiwanis Club, where he organized the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award. This initiative honors officers who go above and beyond the call of duty to keep our community safe.
Mr. Perez also lent his expertise to the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA), Board of Directors for Region One, which covers 37 districts – and has assisted special needs children at the annual Laredo Fishing Derby at Lake Casa Blanca. Furthermore, Mr. Perez has volunteered at numerous Relay for Life fundraising events, and built an artificial golf putting green to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Mr. Perez is currently The Executive Director of United ISD’s Technology Department.
Each year LMT and the LACF recognize a member of our community who encompasses the spirit of volunteerism in Laredo. The Jefferson Award was established in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to serve as the equivalent to the Nobel Prize for public service in America. United Independent School District congratulates Mr. Perez for this well-deserved recognition.
