CBP Officers Seize $2.7M in Marijuana in Shipment of Toilets at World Trade Bridge

LAREDO, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers at the World Trade Bridge encountered a shipment of toilets that consisted of more than commodes; they discovered more than six and a half tons of marijuana.
“As our frontline CBP officers at World Trade Bridge seek to facilitate lawful commerce in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, they maintain a robust enforcement posture and that vigilance and attention to detail resulted in the seizure of more than six and a half tons of marijuana hidden within the commodity,” said Acting Port Director Andrew Douglas, Laredo Port of Entry.
The seizure occurred on Oct. 2 at the World Trade Bridge when CBP officers assigned to the cargo facility encountered a 2015 Freightliner tractor arriving from Mexico hauling a commercial shipment of toilets. CBP officers referred the conveyance for a canine and non-intrusive imaging system inspection, which resulted in the discovery of 1,017 packages containing 13,744 pounds of alleged marijuana hidden within the shipment. The narcotics have an estimated street value of $2,748,404.
CBP officers seized the narcotics. The case was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement-Homeland Security Investigations (ICE-HSI) special agents for further investigation.
