City of Laredo to Begin Routine Water Maintenance Monday

LAREDO, Texas—The City of Laredo Utilities Department is advising residents of a regularly-scheduled water treatment chloramine disinfection taking place from August 17 through September 17, 2020. The City reminds the public that during this maintenance the water will remain safe for everyday use including drinking, cooking and bathing. Residents may identify a chlorine-like smell and taste in their water, as well as a cloudy appearance, but this is normal and part of the process.
Regular water treatment chloramine disinfection is a process that ensures the prevention of nitrification in the water distribution system. This bi-annual process is considered regular maintenance of our system and is approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Your water is safe to use during the disinfectant process.
The City of Laredo uses chloramines as a primary means of disinfection in the water distribution system. Chloramines are formed by the combination of chlorine and ammonia. Periodically flushing the system with free chlorine helps prevent accumulation of excess ammonia and nitrification in the system. Water & Sewer services will not be affected by this work.
For persons who may be sensitive to chlorine (when using a swimming pool may get a rash, itch or feel burning in their eyes or body):
· Children: Fill a tub with water and let it sit for 30 minutes before use
· Use more hot water than cold to reduce the chlorine
· Use less soap and more water, dry and use any hypoallergenic cream
· Call your doctor if you feel any irritation after showering during this period
Furthermore, the city conducts daily tests for bacterial growth and other areas of concern on the public water distribution system. All test results show that the public water system remains safe for use and consumption.
In an effort to enhance its public education efforts, the Utilities Department will launch a bilingual digital and TV campaign to educate the public on the safety and importance of the city’s water maintenance process.
