LAREDO, Texas—The Laredo Public Libraries’ Knitting Club united to participate in a global effort to send handcrafted items to help wildlife survivors of the recent bushfires in Australia. This local initiative was part of a worldwide drive organized by three humane organizations based in Australia: The Fauna Rescue of South Australia, The Rescue Collective, and The Animal Rescue Craft Guild.
Marina Hinojosa, librarian and organizer of the Laredo Public Libraries Knitting Club, expressed her desire to help after hearing stories of Australian wildlife being left homeless and orphaned due to the bushfires.
“We wanted to do something,” stated Hinojosa. “We wanted to send our love to those animals in need and to the rescuers caring for them. Loving our Mother Earth includes loving all wildlife creatures on our beautiful planet.”
Members of the Knitting Club began volunteering their time in January to weave blankets and crochet animal pouches for orphaned kangaroo and koala joeys, owlets, squirrel kits, and rabbits. The project was a labor of love for those involved. The handmade items were mailed to Australia in February of this year.
The Knitting Club meets every Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library, located at 1120 E. Calton Road. For more information on the Knitting Club and their efforts, contact Librarian Marina Hinojosa at (956) 795-2400.
