(Laredo, Texas)-On October 15th, the City of Laredo celebrated the “White Cane Awareness Day.” To make this date memorable, Mayor Pete Saenz proclaimed this day as White Cane Awareness Day in Laredo, Texas. A walk followed the proclamation through the streets of Laredo reaching its end at Jarvis Plaza, where some activities and informational tables were waiting to greet the walk’s participants.
The goal of the exercise was to have people walk in the shoes of the visually impaired. Participants blindfolded themselves and walked the street with the help of a white cane and assistance from other participants that acted as their guides. Amongst the guests of honor were Luz Garcia BCP Specialist for the HHSC Blind Children’s Services, Kenneth Duncan from Lion’s Club, and Mr. Roberto Delgado, founder of Bright Sight Laredo and member of the Blue Ribbon Committee.
