MONTERREY, Mexico—Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz and City of Laredo staff visited with high-level officials in Mexico this week to discuss opportunities for expansion at Port Laredo.

Mayor Saenz and Laredo International Airport Director Jeffery Miller met with Oliver Aguilar Yunes, head of Mexico’s Tributary Administration System (SAT), on September 4 in Mexico City to discuss the possibility to expand international trade with Mexico in Laredo.

The City of Laredo International Airport has submitted a formal request to the government of Mexico asking for changes in operations at the joint customs Bi-National Federal Inspection Station (FIS) in order to allow carriers to consolidate mixed cargo in Laredo. This will allow for operators to send cargo pre-cleared from Laredo to any American city and then to Mexico. Consolidated shipping will reduce costs for operators and allow them to send smaller shipments from Laredo to Mexico.

The talks so far have been very positive. The City of Laredo expects to receive an official response from the Mexican government regarding this request sometime this fall.

If approved, operations would expand immediately. This change would insure Port Laredo’s competitiveness increasing efficiency while reducing air cargo costs to the air freight industry.
