LAREDO, TX – Today in Austin, the Texas Transportation Commission approved the Unified Transportation Plan (UTP) statewide including $220 million for local transportation projects as pre-selected by the Laredo Metropolitan Organization last week.
In Laredo, this funding will allow for the upgrade of US 59 Loop (future I-69) between US Highway 59 and International Boulevard to be brought up to interstate highway standards, the widening of State Highway 359 from approximately four miles east of State Loop 20 to nine miles east of State Loop 20 of which the future road configuration will be two lanes in each direction and a center turn lane. These funds will also allow for the construction of two Interstate Highway 35/US 59 Loop Interchange direct connectors, #3 (I-35 southbound to US 59 Loop eastbound) and #8 (I69W eastbound to I-35 southbound), and the construction of the Interstate Highway 35-Uniroyal Interchange which will help reduce congestion and improve mobility in north Laredo.
“This list of future transportation projects could not have been considered for the UTP if not for the collaborative work by the city and the county governments, and the support from our federal and state legislators,” said Laredo District Engineer David M. Salazar, Jr., P.E.
