Congressman Cuellar and Bipartisan Coalition Include Recycling Amendment to NDAA

Washington, D.C.—This past week, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) successfully included an amendment in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act allowing military recycling centers to accept recyclable goods from local communities. This would allow the profits from the recycling sales to go into the Department of Defense Soldier Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR) account.
MWR is a network of support and leisure services benefiting U.S. servicemembers and veterans with a disability resulting from their service. In the last ten years, over $2 billion have been contributed to this account, vastly increasing the quality of life for these most deserving Americans.
This is also particularly significant for military bases in rural areas that have limited to no access to recycling centers. Congressman Cuellar cosponsored this amendment with the bipartisan support of Congressmen Sanford Bishop (GA-2), John Carter (TX-31), Richard Hudson (NC-8), Dutch Ruppersberger (MD-2), and Steve Womack (AK-3).
Congressman Cuellar said, “This bipartisan amendment will improve the quality of our military installations, and help decrease the environmental impact of our bases and their surrounding communities. Specifically, this will benefit bases in rural areas, such as Joint Base San Antonio, whose nearby residents currently have limited access to recycling services.”
He continued, “Now, bases will be allowed to accept recyclable materials and any associated profits will directly benefit our injured servicemen and women. I would like to thank Congressman John Carter for introducing this amendment and my colleagues for their support of both our soldiers and our environment.”
