LAREDO, Texas—The City of Laredo has issued an update on the sighting of a mountain lion at Slaughter Park in South Laredo.
On June 24, an unconfirmed sighting of a mountain lion and cubs at Slaughter Park was reported to the City of Laredo through the 3-1-1 Customer Service Center. The City of Laredo Animal Care Services Department notified the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and on June 26, TPWD game wardens notified the city that they had positively identified mountain lion tracks at the park close to the Rio Grande. The City of Laredo took necessary precautions to notify the public of this risk.
As of today, TPWD game wardens have informed the City of Laredo that upon further study of those tracks by a biologist, it is believed they were made by a canine and not a mountain lion. Based on this information, the City of Laredo has decided to resume normal operations at the park but continues to advise the public of the risks associated with wildlife at any park that has natural vegetation and hiking trails, and that is close to the Rio Grande. As a reminder, park goers should always be aware of their surroundings, stay on designated hiking trails, and keep all pets on a leash.
