Laredo, Texas—Mayor Pete Saenz traveled to Washington this week with other Texas border mayors and members of the Texas Border Coalition to speak with officials in support of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). The delegation discussed issues of CBP staffing at the ports of entry, trade numbers, and items in the USMCA trade deal that still need to be negotiated to benefit the U.S. and Texas economy.

“Laredo is in a very fortunate position to benefit greatly from an updated trade deal with Mexico and Canada,” said Mayor Pete Saenz. “The United States must commit to the USMCA to continue to increase Americans’ quality of life and offer competitively-priced goods to domestic consumers. Laredo stands to benefit tremendously through this deal, which is why I am here along with other border mayors to ask the Administration and Congress to ratify the USMCA.”

Mexico became the first of the three North American trading partners to ratify the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement earlier on June 19. Laredo was briefly the number one port in the United States, in terms of volume of trade. Laredo currently ranks as the number one land port in the country, and the number two ranked port overall.
