UISD High Schools Excel in UIL District Academic Meet

(Laredo, Texas)-United High School (UHS), United South High School (USHS), J.B. Alexander High School (JBA), and Lyndon B. Johnson High School (LBJ)- along with Del Rio High School, Garcia Early College High School, Eagle Pass High School,and Nixon High School competed in the Annual UIL district academic championship held on March 28-30, 2019 at LBJ. United High School garnered the most points to capture the 1st place Academic Sweepstakes Award, followed Alexander High School, and United South High School. UIL Academic Schools or members placing in the three top spots will advance to the UIL regional meet at UTSA on April 12-13, 2019.

The UIL competition offers contests in the following events: Accounting, Calculator Applications, Computer Applications, Computer Science, Cross-Examination Debate, Current Issues & Events, Editorial Writing, Feature Writing, Headline Writing, Informative Speaking, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Literary Criticism, Mathematics, News Writing, Number Sense, One-Act Play, Persuasive Speaking, Poetry Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Ready Writing, Science, Social Studies and Spelling & Vocabulary. Each contest is intended to teach the thinking skills students will need in college and in their careers.

“UIL students devote countless hours preparing for UIL academic competition,” said Dr. David Stevens, UIL Director of Academics. “Like their athletic counterparts, they practice before, during and after school and attend invitational meets and competitions. UIL academics serves as an extension to the regular classroom for highly motivated, intelligent young men and women, he concluded.”
