(Laredo, Texas)-Excitement was in the air today as Webb County Commissioners were presented a final master plan design for the proposed Webb County Fairgrounds. The presentation was made by Hanson Professional Services. Also on hand for the presentation were fairground planners and architects Bullocksmith Consultants and Gilpin Engineering Company. Community organizations and citizens gave their support for the project during the meeting’s public comment segment.
The presentation gave a brief history of bringing the plan to reality that started back in 1963 when the LIFE organization was created to hold an annual fair.
Seeing the need for a new fairground, Webb County officials started the planning process for the new facility. In 2017 a planning team was hired to facilitate the process and the County and LIFE agreed to work together to make the facility a reality. In June of this year stakeholders help define the region’s needs and this fall the Master Plan was finalized.
The proposed facility will be used for various types of events that includes county fairs, livestock show and sales, receptions, sporting events, concerts and much more. It will also be used by area schools for youth groups such as the FFA and 4-H. Other organizations that will be able to utilize the facility are AgriLife Extension, the Washington’s Birthday Celebration Association and Princess Pocahontas Council.
The proposed facility will feature a Main Events Arena with approximately 4,000 fixed seats, a carpeted banquet hall with attached offices and meeting rooms, two exhibit halls, a show ring, horse barns and festival grounds and outdoor concert stage.
The Commissioners Court voted to move forward with the project and execute the necessary AIA Design documents and advertise for a construction manager at risk for pre-construction of the fairground facilities.
