Arndt Elementary Spearheads Campaign for The Golden Heart Project

Courtesy Alex Meyer,

(Laredo, Texas)-Each year, Arndt elementary school hosts campus-wide projects that benefit children served by charitable organizations in our community. This year, the campus donated 21 backpacks loaded with surprises and goodies to The Golden Heart Project (TGHP), which is dedicated to providing comfort and support to local children (ages 1-18),who are battling cancer or have survived.

Each of the backpacks is tagged with the recipient’s name to give the donation a personal touch, and the contents of each backpack includes crayons, markers, puzzles, notebooks, coloring books and other items. All of the items can be used while the young patients wait to see their physicians, or during hospital stays. The backpacks will be distributed to children in UISD and LISD.

Ms. Janee Nuñez, founder of The Golden Heart Project, said that the gifts will let childhood cancer patients know that they are not alone. “I started the project in 2015, and we’ve been blessed to receive so much support from our community. In this case, Ms. Ommen (Arndt Counselor), reached out to me and asked if there was something her campus could do to help. I was moved by her readiness to organize a collection with the support of her Principal Ms. Zepeda. On behalf of the children we serve, I wish to thank all of the teachers, parents and students who put their heart into this effort”, said Nuñez.  In previous years, Arndt elementary has led collection drives to assist local organizations that serve the children of our community. Past drives have helped Lutheran Social Services (Foster and Adoption Agency), Sacred Heart Children’s Home, and Bethany House.
