(Laredo, Texas)-Lesa Roe, Chancellor of the University of North Texas and former NASA Deputy Administrator was the featured speaker at United ISD’s Hidden Figures Symposium. The event was held at the Student Activities complex for students who are enrolled in the District’s Scientific Research and Design course. Roe spoke to students about the importance of believing anything is possible as long as they believe they can achieve it. “What you believe to be true will become your truth,” said Roe. “Only you can write your story,” she added.

During her tenure at NASA, Roe served as the first female Director of NASA Langley Research Center. Roe was the first in her family to attain a college degree. “Sometimes the culture you’re in is so thick and so pervasive, that you don’t think you can get out of it until you do,” she said. As the first female Deputy Administrator Roe attributes her success to “those that changed her knowledge and impacted her the most because they in turn changed the world forever in her success.”

The Texas A&M International University DustyTRON team also participated in the event. Dr. Tariq Tashtoush, Assistant Professor for the Engineering Department shared insight on the innovative coursework and programs students who participate in the program partake in. Students from TAMIU were on hand to showcase various robots they created and shared information on projects they’re currently working on.

After the event Roe and TAMIU students/professors joined students as they showcased projects they worked on during the year. Roe took time to visit with students, offering insight to many topics pertaining to space and science, and praised them for their good work.
