Four United ISD Swimmers Advance to State Competition

(Laredo, Texas)-Four United ISD student athletes won big at the UIL Regional Competition in Brownsville, earning them a spot to compete at the upcoming State Swimming and Diving Competition.

 Danielle Perales and Alijah Rodriguez of United High both qualified to move on to the next round when they placed in their categories. Perales took second in the 200-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke while her fellow teammate, Rodriguez, took home medals in both the 50-yard freestyle (gold) and 100-yard freestyle (silver).

Aneesa Mohammad and Chelsea Fuentes of John B. Alexander High School, too brought home medals and qualified to advance to state. Mohammad took home second in 200-individual medley and her fellow teammate Fuentes also took second in the 500-yard freestyle. In addition to placing in these categories both Mohammad and Fuentes participated in relay competitions earning them bronze medals respectively.

 Alexander High School Swimmers won an impressive 11 medals overall putting them four medals behind the team who won the championship. Both United High and United South won medals as well. “The caliber of students competing was amongst the best in the region,” stated Roberto J. Santos, Superintendent for United ISD. “We are indeed proud of the success these athletes achieved.”  

 According to Natatorium and Aquatics Coordinator, Sam Fruia, five new district records were set at this competition giving students competing over the weekend  a little something more to feel proud of.

 The four are off to the State Swimming and Diving Meet at the University of Texas in Austin on February 16th and 17th
