(Laredo, Texas)-UISD held  a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony this past Monday at the new Freedom Elementary School located at 415 E.G. Ranch Road. The 104,445 square foot campus encompasses grades Pre-K through 5th grade, and can accommodate up to 900 students. The school was built on land previously owned by the Eloy and Bonnie Garcia family.

Board President Juan Roberto Ramirez and Superintendent of Schools Roberto J. Santos both spoke a few words at the event, and Principal Laura P. De Los Santos praised her staff for preparing for school’s grand opening and subsequent ribbon cutting ceremony. Special guests included local veterans, Ms. Lupita Zepeda, who represented District 80 Texas State representative Tracy O. King and Webb County Clerk Margie Ibarra.

Additional speakers included Ricardo Martinez, a fifth grade student who attends Freedom Elementary School. Martinez’ suggestion to name the campus Freedom Elementary School was acknowledged by a volunteer committee that reviewed suggestions from other students, parent volunteers, administrators and citizens from the boundary area of Zaffirini elementary school.

Superintendent Santos and district Trustees presented Principal De Los Santos with a framed panoramic photo of the campus’ 2017-2018 inaugural class and the Freedom Elementary Golden Stingers Dance Team performed a celebratory dance in advance of the ribbon cutting. Freedom Elementary School is Home of the Bees, and its colors are gold silver and black. The school is named in remembrance of our  veterans and active military who continue to preserve freedom for all.
