USHS Book Club Combines Reading Assigment with 3-D Technology

(Laredo, Texas)-Students in the United South High School (USHS), Book Club, sponsored by librarian Griselda Gonzalez and ELA teacher Linda Lee Ramon, recently completed the task of reading the novel The House On Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros.

Once the assignment was completed, club members met regularly to discuss the literary elements, symbolism, and thematic events as it related to the literature. Book club members also had access to an online blog where sponsors posed questions about the book, which in turn, gave students an opportunity to discuss the novel in greater detail.

This exercise helped students reinforce what they learned through the reading and analysis process.  Students from Amando Chapa’s graphic arts class also partook in the book discussion, and collaborated with their peers to use newly acquired 3D technology to print symbols that evoke the the narrative of The House on Mango Street.

At the conclusion of the project, all book club and graphics arts students gathered at the LCC Fine Arts Complex to watch the play based on the book. “Combining reading with 3D imagery gives students a broader understanding of what they read, and sparks their imagination to further investigate the meaning of literary works”, said USHS librarian Griselda Gonzalez.
