Man sentenced to 10 years for aggravated assaul

(Laredo, Texas)-The District Attorney’s Office has secured a guilty plea in its case against Gilberto Alejandro Arevalo for attacking a man at a store parking lot.
On September 7, 2014, the Laredo Police Department Communications Division received a 911 call of a reported assault that occurred at the Walmart Store parking lot located at the 4000 block of US Highway 83.
The caller stated that a male subject and a pregnant female subject had been assaulted. When one of the officers arrived at the scene, they met with two victims who stated that a black in color Grand Marquis drove recklessly through the parking lot while they were driving on the wrong side.
After the victims parked their vehicle and exited, the same vehicle returned towards them and stopped behind them. A female driver and a male passenger exited the vehicle and attacked the victims.
The female, later identified as Alexandra Villalobos attacked the pregnant victim. The male victim attempted to separate them when the male subject, identified as Gilberto Alejandro Arevalo punched him several times on the face.
The male victim fell to the ground and Arevalo continued to attack him by kicking him on the face and causing a cut to his right eye. Both defendants then got into the vehicle and fled the parking lot.
After investigation by local authorities, the couple was arrested, and charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony in the State of Texas.
Arevalo plead guilty before the 341st District Court Judge Beckie Palomo. Arevalo was sentenced to 10 years to serve at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
On July 18, 2017, his co-defendant, Alexandra Villalobos, also plead guilty and was sentenced to 10 years probated for 10 years, attend anger management classes and was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $17,594.
Assistant District Attorneys Claudia Sandoval, Alvaro Aguirre and Francisco Rodriguez prosecuted the case for the State.
