(Laredo, Texas)-An ambitious group of Middle School students at Lamar Bruni Vergara Middle School participated in the school’s 2nd Annual Pi Day festivities. Only 60 students are chosen by their math teacher to take part on this special day.
Students were separated into groups of three and competed in hopes of getting a chance to “pie” any of their math teachers. Competitions involved students reciting the most digits of pi, working out a Sudoku with the first nine digits of pi, and creating the most informative poster with fun facts about pi. Each student that was part of the winning group won an opportunity to throw an actually pie their math teacher… all in the name of fun.
Pi Day is celebrated on March 14 (3/14) around the world. Pi, a Greek letter “π,” is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant – the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter – which is approximately 3.14259.
Pi Day was first officially celebrated on a large scale in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Since then, Pi Day has been celebrated by millions of students and math-lovers each year.
The event was held on March 14 which also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.
