(Laredo, Texas)-The Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) Athletics Department is teaming up with Play4Kay to host a breast cancer awareness day on Thursday, February 9. The TAMIU Sports Information office announced game details this week.
Play4Kay is the grassroots fundraising initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. It was originally called Think Pink, later became Pink Zone and most recently and finally, Play4Kay. Numerous sports, groups and organizations have hosted Play4Kay fundraisers — and have made a lasting impact that resonated with their fans and the community, all while raising funds for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was born in December, 2007 and is a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers by raising funds for scientific research, assisting the underserved, and unifying people for a common cause. To date, the Fund has allocated more than $5 million in support of women’s cancer research.
TAMIU Athletics has hosted the game previously and looks to bring awareness of the disease to all in the TAMIU community, the City of Laredo, and the South Texas Region.
“Teaming up with the Kay Yow foundation gives us an opportunity to increase the support TAMIU Athletics gives our local community, while gaining national recognition for a great cause,” said Tim Fairhead, sports information director.
The February 9 game falls in the middle of TAMIU’s annual Spirit Week as the Dustdevils host St. Edward’s University.
The Dustdevils and Hilltoppers, along with game day staff will wear pink Play4Kay branded apparel to help raise awareness for the cause. Throughout the Women’s game, Play4Kay t-shirts will be thrown to fans. Additionally, TAMIU Athletics is donating all proceeds from concessions to the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation.
For more information on donating to the cause, please contact TAMIU Athletics at 956.326.3174.
Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in the TAMIU Kinesiology Convocation Building (KCB) with the Men’s Basketball game to follow.
All fans in attendance are encouraged to participate in a pre-game tailgate on the green at the KCB. Various Student Organizations and University departments will team up to provide a pre-game tailgate experience for all fans.
