(Laredo, Texas)-The United ISD Middle & High School Leadership/Academic Conference for Migrant Students was held at the SAC auditorium on June 16, 2016. The conference welcomed three of the individuals portrayed in the motion picture McFarland U.S.A.
The film recounts the true story of Coach Jimmie White, and how he transformed a group of disadvantaged migrant students into champion cross-country runners. Coach White and two of his protégés, brothers Danny and David Diaz, were present to share their recollections with an audience that included students, teachers and administrators. The presentation was further enhanced by playbacks of scenes from the film, and concluded with a Q&A segment.
Coach White and the Diaz brothers stressed the importance of a good education and a strong work ethic. “No matter what you set out to achieve, a successful outcome is far more likely when you learn to control your attitude about the things that challenge you. Heartfelt determination and a positive outlook are also essential to winning”, said White. “Once you achieve your goals, you should reach out to make a positive difference for those who follow you.” he concluded. The presentation was sponsored by the 2016 Laredo Cares Initiative, IBC, and coordinated by United ISD’s Federal & State Programs department.
