United South High Athletes Top Powerlifting Championship in the Lone Star State

United South high school students Carlos Sanchez and Laisha Gardner each garnered gold medals for their performances at the most recent Texas state powerlifting meet. Carlos Sanchez triumphed over all fellow competitors in the super heavy weight division with a first place win, lifting over 1900 total pounds of weight amid the bench press, squat and dead lift. The aforementioned total includes an impressive 800 pound squat, which tied him for the 2nd best mark in the entire state at any level. The total actually tied him with a lifter from Dickinson, but the Panther tipped the scales at a lighter weight giving him the tiebreaker.

AlishaJoining him in the top spot was Laisha Gardner, who nabbed first place in the Girl’s 181 pound class division.  Gardner lifted 425 pounds in a squat, 200 pounds on the bench press, and 435 pounds in the deadlift competition for a combined total of 1,060 pounds.  Ms. Gardner broke the state record twice on deadlift at 415 pounds, then again at 435 pounds.  She received a plaque for best deadlift, beat her competition by 5 pounds, and remained undefeated the for whole season.
